Hiking Short Creek WEATHER UPDATE!!!
Since I more or less took over the other Caney Creek Trail thread I thought I would start another one on
hiking the lesser known Short Creek that is also in Caney Creek Wilderness. I did it several times back in
the 70's. Best educated guess would be in the area of 1974-75. Any way I decided to do a little search
online on the subject and low and behold I found that there is a trail back in there from the west.
Check it out HERE
The companion article I haven't been able to locate. I will tell you this, I WILL check this out![b][i]

Re: Hiking Short Creek WEATHER UPDATE!!!
Just to let all know I have emailed the FS in Mena and have already gotten a replay:
I'll talk to Tom Breashears about this
and see what he says. The instructions seem pretty clear, I wonder
when it was last used.
In this country it could get pretty overgrown.
I've followed trails in Northern California that were last used in
the 1930's and were still visible
Any way as I told her I plan on checking out as soon as I can. .

Isn't the net just amazing! The FS doesn't know anything about it. I want to go back in there but they
are calling for thunder on Sat. Any way I am curious.

Re: Hiking Short Creek WEATHER UPDATE!!!
I also got a reply from Jim Zornes the head ranger for the Mena FS district and he isn't familiar with it either.
He is also going to check into it. Sounds like a backcountry hike is coming soon!

This is awesome. I really like this kind of stuff. Who wrote it? I saw that spur on the Buckeye Trail and wondered where it might go. That makes an awesome loop.

Re: Hiking Short Creek WEATHER UPDATE!!!
I believe that the article originated at:
http://www.norwela.org/
this is a Boy Scouts of America site in LA. I can't seem to trace down the
Exploring the Caney Creek Wilderness article. I even have the FS interested
in this. As far as trail I believe that it is just a old trace. Seems like I can
remember a old road back in the 70's. As the article says this area was farm
land before the Wilderness designation. Also there were quite a few mines all
thru the mountains. I can remember finding old mining tools back in the 70's
hiking along.

Re: Hiking Short Creek WEATHER UPDATE!!!
Maybe this is another new thread but a guy told me there is the remains of an old mining community and a blocked off mine on top of a mountian on a side road between Albert Pike and LIttle Missiouri Falls.

That is so exciting! We should have a group hike to check it out. Can't let Tom have all the fun.

Re: Hiking Short Creek WEATHER UPDATE!!!
I have a old map of the Wilderness area and this looks very plausible. On the old topo map is shows the private land just across the river and the boundary line.
The so called trail goes right along the fence line! It is a go for me!!

Re: Hiking Short Creek WEATHER UPDATE!!!
By the way the W. entry into the Caney Creek Trail didn't originally start were it does now. I think that
it started some were around the bridge that is mentioned in the article and you walked a path to were
you ford the Tot.

No luck fining the article but with a little imagination one could figure out different ways to lay out a extended hike.
I have searched till I am blue in the face. The host page for the pdf seems to be a Boy Scouts of America page but
I can't find any links to any articles.
Ed,
I would like to go in this weekend but am concerned about the weather. Will know a little closer to the weekend.
