Mapping Software or other option?

Post by colt1911carry on Tue Jul 08, 2008 1:25 pm

What do most of you guys use for maps? Do you print maps from USGS, use software like TOPO!, buy them from somewhere else? I like the maps that Charlie sells through ouachitamaps.com, but he oly has maps of a few trails in Arkansas.

I always carry USGS topo maps, which I usually buy from a ranger station in the area for $6. If I have a Tim Ernst book that covers the area, I'll make copies of the pages that encompass the trail(s) I'll be on. That's all I ever use.

Really depends on what I am doing. I will use the local maps that we get at the ranger stations. I just like collecting them I guess. lol. I generally use a MAPGPS 60 Garman and I like the TOPO maps that it uses. But there are some other very nice software platforms out there and it depends on what I am doing. For driving to and from I like my Garman Nuvii 200 wide screen. Long Distance drives I like the Microsoft Street and Trips softare bundled with a Pharos card. For checking out terrain here at the house I like the National Geographic state TOPO maps. lol. I am a software hound so I do use it a great deal. lol

I like to use Trail Hankies, they have worked really good for me so far. I use them to filter water, wipe sweat off my face, or use as a doo rag Very Happy.

colt:
If I'm needing a topo map of a certain area, I go to www.mytopo.com and I can customize a topo map of the exact area that I need and in the size that I need. They will also print the map on waterproof paper if I need them to. The only thing that I don't know is, that because these are USGS topo maps, if designated trails show up on them, if that matters to you.
