Buffalo Solo Trip Report

Post by Owl on Mon Mar 08, 2010 8:51 am

I got back yesterday afternoon from a two night solo backpacking trip on the Buffalo. The weather was perfect. I did a leisurely 10 miles in three days just taking it easy, lingering in camp, exploring, taking photos, etc. What a great way to spend the weekend.

Great pics! It has been a long time since I have been on or around the Buff.

I know that you had a great time, I love hiking all around there. There are so many different trails there, you could spend a week there and still not hike the same trail twice. Great pics, and you are right, it is a great way to spend the weekend.

ED:

I did a loop starting at Kyle's Landing hiking the Old River Trail, camped the first night just upstream from Horseshoe Bend, then continued the next day on the ORT just meandering around Granny Henderson's cabin and then on to Jim Bluff and then to the river below Big Bluff then I backtracked to the Beech Creek primitive route and camped up it a ways. The next day I continued on the primitive route to the Buffalo River Trail and 4.5 miles back to Kyle's.

Nice pics, Owl. I noticed the one with the kayaker. Was there much boat traffic on the river? I imagine that in a couple of weeks the spring breakers will be floating their kegs and kayaks.

Did you ford the river? How was it?

I saw 6-8 boats. The river was 2.3' at Ponca so it was on the low side.

The deepest crossing I had was about knee deep.
