Fishing the Little Missouri
Hello All-
Just found this site. I'm from Texas, but have done a little backpacking in Arkansas. As my boys grow older, I look forward to doing a lot more.
Can anyone spare a little fishing advice? I'm planning a short weekend backpacking trip to the LMT for the middle of October. It will be my older son's first trip. We plan on hiking 3 or 4 miles south from the Falls and camping and doing a little fishing.
I am, at best, a mediocre angler. If we don't catch anything, it won't be the end of the world, but I know my son would get a huge charge out of catching a fish and having it for supper.
Anyone have any secret spots they're willing to share? Any bait or lure suggestions?
Thanks
PD

Hello P_D and welcome. While I am not a fisherman anylonger I can't give any advice on the fishing. But you have picked a great trail. Hope to see you on a trail in the future.

I don't mind sharing. I live in the Dallas area and go to Little Mo half a dozen times a year. Most of my fishing is south of Albert Pike, but I know 2 spots where you are going. Let me try to explain where they are if I can. About 3 miles south of the falls you'll see some big food plots on your left and then you'll come into a big meadow next to a big slow spot in the river. There are a bunch of small mouth in that pool and tho most of them are small there are some bigger ones in there.
About 15-20 minutes south of that pool the trail crosses the river in a fairly deep crossing. If you wade upstream a couple minutes you'll see a nice pool under a sheer cliff. Cast right into the rock and let it fall into the water. I once pulled a really nice trout out of that pool.
For lures I like Mepps spinners or small silver spoons. You can also try Salmon eggs.
Good Luck

Thanks for the welcome Eddie. And thanks for the hot spots, Mark! My son and I can hardly wait for next month. I'll try those areas and those lures. I'm much more patient and thorough if I have a reason to believe that there really are fish where I'm casting!
