26th-27th overnite hike

Post by snowsurfer1973 on Fri Apr 11, 2008 5:20 pm

On the weekend of the 26th and 27th I am going down to the Buffalo for a overnite hike. If anyone would care to meet up and tag along with me that would be great. I am the founder of Beyond the Face Adventures and am going to be hosting many trips to come and are looking for people with the same passion for the outdoors that I have. I moved here from New Hampshire 2 years ago and am loving the wilderness down here in Arkansas. If there are any takeres on the 26th and 27th let me know. You can also check out my website at beyondtheface.com to see what I am all about. Happy trails to you all.

Hi.. Just found you guys. Hope to see all of you guys on the trail. My Baby Brother and his son and I will but up that away that weekend. Actually will be there the 25, 26 and 27th. Going to do a couple of sections of the BRT. Stay in either Kyle's or Ozark. Don't exactly know where we be. I don't know how hard of a wekend they will want. Looks like we may meet up with another of my freinds and his son. Overall, I expect it to be great. Was just up there for a week a couple of weeks ago. Had a blast. Hope you get a few to meet up with you Snow.

It was great, I don't ever seem to attract ticks. I get them occasionally but not much. I hiked about twenty two miles in the weekend and it felt great. Working my way up to fifteen or sixteen in a day. When I do the OHT in the fall I want to be nice and strong.I enjoy it more if I can hike far and not be winded at the end of the day. Where did you all end up hiking?

We just did day hikes. Did the Earbie end... down to the swinging bridge. Showed them the women carved into the rocks there, most people can never find it... lol. Did the Steel Creek end downstream to the second overlook. Did Lost Valley and the full Round Top Mountain. Did the Hawksbill down to the 3 different falls and finished up with a trip through the Ozark Campground (where we were staying) down to Pruitt. Meet some really nice people both on the trail and on the trails. Meet some really crapie ones too in the campground... You know that’s what we need a "Worst of" stories thread.. lol. Which end did you tackle? I had a total newbie and a 10 year old so could not do a long stretch.. Keep asking the little one if he was ready to turn back and when he got to where he said yea, we, well, turned back... hahaha.

I hiked from the parking area of Jim Villines boyhood home to Kiles Landing on the Buffalo River Trail. It is a great hike with lots of scenery. I know what you mean baout bringing the younglins, I brought my five year old this weekend for a dayhike, it was his first five miler, he did very well though not complaining much at all. Getting him ready for an overnite. Sounds like you had a good time,I really want to check out Hawksbill next time.

Yea the hawksbill is really nice. I wish we would have done it on the morning of the 26.. that sat. Loads of low lieing cloud cover. Would have been something else up and down that valley.

If the fuel prices ever go down, fat chance, i and the wife would like to get back up in the area of the
Craig. Back in around 1977 or 78 the college buddies and I went up in that area and explored around.
We had a blast. This was before all of the land had been acquired for the national river. We were able
to drive down to the river, by goat bluff and Steel Creek. Any way a great place in the state to visit.
If you guys get tired of me musing over the past just say so!

Hey Snow.. There are 3 that I know of. I never knew the names of them till Tim Ernest did his waterfalls guidebook. The one that everyone visits is called Haley Falls. Its actually 2 falls at 17ft and 45ft. The second is down a old lesser trail (a mule trail) called er… Mule Trail Falls at 31ft. The third is one of my fav. At 48ft. Thousand Kisses Falls. All are within like a 2 mile radius of the crag, and all 3 are just to the west of the crag, and almost pass right by them on the way in to the crag, lol. Tim’s book has all the details in it. VERY WELL WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION, lol. I found waterfalls in it that I had hiked around most of my life and never knew they were there. I know them now though :-D .

Hey, Ouachita,
Did you happen to still be in college back in 77 and 78, and if so, was it the U of A? The reason I ask is that I attended the University at that time and spent a lot of weekends on the Buffalo, either floating or hiking.

I went to Henderson State from 72 to 76. I spent some time in the Ozarks during this time but mainly in the Ouachitas esp. the Caney Creek areas. Did quite alot of off trail hiking back then but a good bit on the OT. Back then it was real spotty on what was finished. Good memories..
